South American Ski Selections: DPS Wailer 112 RPC
If the Lotus 138 put DPS on the map, the Wailer 112RP made the company much more of a household name. The 112RP is a popular, surfy, and fun powder ski that sacrifices little in the way of quick, energetic hard snow carving performance. This season, DPS introduces the Wailer 112 RPC—the C is for “charger.”
At 115mm underfoot, the 112RPC is slightly wider than the 112RP, giving the ski a longer, progressive 20-23m turn radius that’s meant to favor faster, bigger turns down the fall line.
For greater stability through crud and chop, the splay of the 112’s tip and tail rocker will be reduced on the RPC. DPS is also tweaking its “S.S.” construction, putting three vertically integrated titinal ribs in the RPC’s Pure: Carbon + Nano core (vs. two in the 112) to give the ski an “entirely new feel.”
DPS is hinting at other construction changes with RPC as a “preview of a new construction that will take DPS into the future,” though we won’t know exactly what they are until the full 2013 product line rolls out.
So we’ve apparently got a damper, burlier Wailer made to rip bigger, more aggressive lines—like the ones Las Leñas is known for—and we get to put it in direct comparison to two other directional, 115mm skis (the Salomon Rocker 2 and the Down Skis Countdown 3) and a number of other big-mountain boards.
We leave for Argentina two weeks from today, on the 17th. The 17th can’t possibly come soon enough.
